This day program offers students an immersive, hands-on exploration of the dynamic relationship between geology, biology, and conservation. Set in the beautiful Springbrook National Park, this experience takes students on a journey through the park's diverse landscapes, delving into the geological history of the Tweed Volcano. Students will step back in time and develop an understanding of how geomorphological processes like volcanic activity and the ongoing processes of weathering and erosion over millions of years has shaped the land. They will also learn about the various forest types, rock and soil formations, and abundance of life in this biodiversity hotspot. First Nations cultural connections and land management use over thousands of years will be explored, highlighting the importance of custodianship and caring for Country. By engaging with scientific concepts and cultural perspectives, students will gain a deeper understanding of the interconnections between natural processes, human activity, and the sustainable management of these unique landscapes.

Key Concepts:

  • Geomorphological Processes and Landforms - Understand how natural forces like volcanic activity, weathering, and erosion shape landscapes.
  • Cultural and Spiritual Connections to Land - Explore the significance of landscapes to First Nations Australians and their cultural practices in caring for Country.
  • Natural Processes and Human Activity - Investigate how human actions impact the environment, particularly through erosion and sedimentation.
  • Ecological Conservation and Biodiversity - Examine practices that support the conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity, focusing on sustainability and protection of natural habitats.
