The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award is an exciting youth development program offered for people aged between 14 and 25 and comprises four levels – Bridge, Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each level involves participating in a Skill, Physical Recreation, Community Service element and undertaking two Adventurous Journeys. Young people choose their own activities and set their own goals to complete their chosen Award level. This adventurous learning initiative has a strong emphasis on practical, physical and adventurous learning, leadership development, resilience & capacity building.
At Numinbah Valley Environmental Education Centre, we can support a limited number of Duke of Edinburgh Award units with the Adventurous Journey (AJ) component of their programs. We can facilitate daytime hikes for Bridge AJs; and overnight hiking and camping expeditions for Bronze and Silver AJs. Our NVEEC teachers have certified bushwalking accreditations and expedition experience. We only run Adventurous Journeys during term time (not weekends or school holidays).
We work with a minimum of 14 and maximum of 21 students. With a 1:7 ratio required for AJs, at least 2 staff members from visiting school need to attend and have necessary bushwalking fitness & experience, plus, camping skills. Visiting school staff need to have completed relevant Duke of Edinburgh training as directed by the Queensland Award Office. Hire of equipment from our centre can be negotiated.
